Weekend 101… Bill Bernstein: Disco

Bill-Bernstein

Xenon #1, 1979

Bill Bernstein: Disco at the Serena Morton Gallery offers a rare insight into the bygone days of New York’s vibrant disco scene and the glam crowd who lived and breathed it every weekend.

The exhibition goes beyond images of Grace Jones and Donna Summer in their dance floor best to offer a view of the nightlife regulars at famous haunts such as Studio 54 and Paradise Garage.

Bernstein, a nightclub regular himself, also worked for The Village Voice, and captured these black and white snaps depicting the golden era of disco over an eighteen month period from late 1977.

Disco is an era that never fails to influence – Lulu was inspired by the phenomenon when she created her disco ball shaped handbag (the Mirror Ball Orb Clutch) and Mirror Ball headphones bag.

Be inspired by the retro and romantic images featuring heaving smoke-filled floors and outrageous party dressing before it’s too late – the exhibition closes on January 23.
