From Bottle to Bag

Discover the innovation story behind our Recycled Totes

At Lulu Guinness, great design has always been about creativity and craft. But behind some of our most-loved totes is another story too - one of transformation and innovation. Where discarded plastic bottles are given a stylish second life, turning everyday waste into durable, design-led bags.

The journey begins with plastic bottles collected from post-consumer waste streams, meaning they are rescued before reaching landfill or the ocean. At a specialist facility they are washed and separated, before the main bottle is melted down into small pellets. These pellets are then transformed into fine yarn-like threads, which are woven into rolls of fabric. Once the fabric is ready, our designs are digitally printed onto it before the material is cut, stitched and finished into the final bag by skilled production teams.

Every detail counts

Even smaller elements can come from recycled materials. Bottle caps, for example, can be repurposed into decorative accessories such as charms or studs, like the lip studs on the Flurry of Kisses bag. The recycled pellets can also be compressed into sheet materials used for non-woven fabrics, while handles are produced through a similar recycled process.

Millions of bottles transformed

Across Lulu Guinness products, more than 12 million plastic bottles have been transformed into bags, including designs such as the OG Striped Tote and the Silver ToteUsing recycled plastic not only reduces waste but also creates strong, durable materials designed to be used again and again. The recycled polyester used in these bags is produced under Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certification, alongside other recognised manufacturing standards. It’s a powerful reminder that with the right process, even a plastic bottle can be transformed into something beautifully made, and carried for years to come.
