Each season we will partner with one of our favourite female photographers to document a key Lulu Guinness bag in our signature ‘Lulu’ red. We will leave the narrative of the imagery to them, creating an ongoing conversation between Lulu Guinness and the artistic community we work alongside.

For AW19, we approached British-Canadian photographer Lorena Lohr. Known for her work documenting the distinct character of her surroundings in the American Southwest, Lorena has published a number of limited edition artist’s books and held exhibitions around the world.

Our creative director David Hogdson first discovered her work in London’s Cob Gallery: “I had wanted to work with Lorena for a long time. I love the colours she captures in her photographs and had bought one of her books before I even started at Lulu”, he said. “She was the first person that came to mind when I started to think about photographers to collaborate with. When I was looking through her book I could just imagine our red Queenie bag popping up, it seemed to fit in so perfectly with her colours.”

For the shoot, Lorena took our red Queenie - a new style for the season - on a road trip with her through the desert in Spain. See what they got up to below.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT YOU DO AND HOW YOU STARTED OUT.

I take photos of everyday surroundings, things that can all too often be passed by. The work has accumulated over time, in layers of narrative, just as these places I am documenting were gradually built up over the years by the people who passed though them. For the past 10 years, I have been riding on buses and trains through America and making an ongoing series called Ocean Sands. However, I’ve recently expanded the focus of this series to parts of Europe - the Spanish desert towns I visited for these pictures for example.

WHAT PROJECTS ARE CURRENTLY KEEPING YOU UP AT NIGHT?

I’ve been making prints in the darkroom for an upcoming solo show, Tonight Lounge, opening December 5th at the Cob Gallery in London. It will contain new and previously unseen work and will coincide with the publication of a monograph (also published by Cob Gallery) that will be launched at the opening.

YOU RECENTLY TOOK OUR BAG AWAY WITH YOU. WHERE DID YOU GO?

The desert in Spain, around the region of Almería, was used for the filming of Spaghetti Westerns, so I had an interest in the place for a while. I went to small towns around the province, factory towns in the middle of arid landscapes, abandoned holiday resorts, towns where the houses are made out of caves. I also took a boat to Mellila, the Spanish autonomous city in Morocco, which has a lot of ornate buildings and surfaces. I continued making photos in my regular way -  but with a touch of red.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE IMAGE FROM THE SHOOT AND WHY?

The car, though I can’t exactly say why.  As with all the photos things just fell into place.
