“My favourite book is Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. Because when life doesn’t make much sense it’s just nice to fall down the rabbit hole into a world of profoundness!

This is why I love spending time in our new store in King Street! As soon as I walk in I feel like I’ve fallen into the abstract world of Alice in Wonderland. The colours, shapes and textures transport me into the garden of the singing flowers.”

“My favourite book is called I’ve Lived In East London for 86.5 Years. It’s mainly a picture book shot by Martin Usborne. It tells the life story of a man called Joseph Markovich and is just wonderful. He talks about the changes he’s seen in society, his relationships and his surroundings. It’s a raw and honest depiction of life in London.”

EDITORIAL CONSULTANT

“I am currently re-reading Patti Smith's memoirs Just Kids and M Train. Why re-read? Well I am working on my own memoir at the moment, so it's inspiring from that point of view. In times of trouble, I think it's good to focus your energies into something positive. But mainly, I'm a huge Patti Smith fan, she's an inspiring person who overcame so many challenges in her early life and she has a gift for transporting you into her world. In Just Kids, it's a world she inhabits alongside her best friend, the late photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, and the artistic underground scene of New York in the 1970s. Oh and it will make you cry, which for me is always a good quality in a book!”

“David & Goliath - Underdogs, Misfits and the Art of battling Gi. I like it because firstly each story is a small chapter so you don't lose concentration, and it's a feel good book where each story explains a different way to looking at what we think is a disadvantage or an advantage.”

“The Ginger Tree by Oswald Wynd. The story of an innocent young girl sent to Japan to marry a British Attaché and ends up having an affair with a Japanese soldier. She is rejected by her husband and her family. The story follows her through these traumas and to her understanding of the Japanese mentality. Really love this book. Have read it several times. Love the historical side of society.”

"Small Island by Andrea Levy. I love all of Andrea Levy’s books, she was focused on exploring the stories of Jamaican British people and how they navigated their various identities. But Small Island is my favourite, a portrayal of the early years in London for the Windrush Generation, reading it feels like spending time with my ancestors as they navigated their new lives post WW2"
